Argentina have confirmed Alejandro Sabella as coach of the national side until the 2014 World Cup finals.

Sabella succeeds Sergio Batista in the role after his contract was terminated following a disappointing Copa America, where hosts Argentina were knocked out by eventual winners Uruguay at the quarter-final stage.

Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Julio Grondona said on Monday there would be no formal announcement since it had become common knowledge the 56-year-old was being given the post.

"The details are being finalised but Sabella has already been presented (in the media) and will be coach from here until the World Cup in Brazil, contingent on Argentina qualifying for the tournament," said Grondona.

Sabella, who was assistant to Daniel Passarella at the 1998 World Cup, is the fourth coach to take charge of Argentina in five years since Jose Pekerman stepped down after the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

The Argentinian, who led Estudiantes to the 2009 Copa Libertadores title as well as the domestic league last year, has withdrawn from a deal with United Arab Emirates club Al-Jazira to be free for the job.

As a player, Sabella represented the likes of Argentina, River Plate and Estudiantes, as well as English clubs Sheffield United and Leeds.
