It looks like Luis Gil is back on track. After a year buried on the depth chart at Real Salt Lake, the midfield prodigy who wowed fans and scouts alike two years ago at the U-17 World Cup has suddenly entrenched himself in the first team.

The 17-year-old got his first MLS start last month and has made regular appearances since signaling as much promise at his age and position as any American since Claudio Reyna. That's good news all around. Gil remains a bright prospect for the U.S., and MLS is getting some much-needed returns on its growing investment in American youth soccer.

Gil's development proves a point. Plenty of skeptics still say that MLS doesn't have the coaching or resources to properly develop players. The argument follows that whenever a young American has the chance, he should bolt as quickly as possible for Europe.

But Gil has done exactly the opposite. He had the chance to join one of Europe's top sides after the U-17 World Cup in 2009, but decided instead on a team closer to his California home. If that choice works out, it will say as much about the league's development as it does about the player's.
