Brown sets sights on striker

Aberdeen manager Craig Brown is confident of signing a forward 'of real quality' on loan before the transfer window closes and has held discussions with Premier League clubs.

Brown cast his eye over trialists Mikael Nicoise and Michael Woods in Monday's 2-2 friendly draw at Peterhead but will not be offering either player a deal at present and is continuing the search for attacking reinforcements.

He believes there is a chance of landing somebody from England's top flight, with Premier League clubs required to name their 25-man squads at the start of September.

"There is no harm in looking and that's what we were doing with the two lads at Peterhead," Brown explained in the Daily Record.

"I'm happy to do that because you might get lucky and pick up a real gem.

"But we have specific targets in mind as far as strikers go.

"The English Premier League clubs must cut their squads down to 25 by the end of August.

"The top sides such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have as many as 30 candidates for those places and that's before they have finished making new signings.

"I've already spoken to a lot of the managers there to ask about the possibility of getting anyone on loan."

Brown accepts that supporters may therefore have to be patient as they wait for new faces but he hopes it will be worth it.

"I was fortunate to get Nick Blackman from Blackburn when I was Motherwell boss and I'm hoping to get another striker who can be as successful at Aberdeen," said Brown.

"It may mean having to go with the strikers we already have for a little longer but I'll do it if it means getting a player of real quality."
