Joe Hart lifts Man City by Galaxy
Joe Hart saved A.J. DeLaGarza's penalty and then scored the winner in the ninth round of a shootout as Manchester City beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 7-6 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw Sunday.
Mario Balotelli was pulled by Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini after he broke in on goal, then turned around and attempted to score by backheeling the ball into the net. City's chance at a 2-0 lead went wide.
Martin: Mario Balotelli a lost cause?
Mario Balotelli's latest hall-of-shame play -- a poorly advised backheel against the Los Angeles Galaxy -- once again suggests the Manchester City striker is a lost cause, writes James Martin. Blog
Mancini had some strong words for the striker as he made his way to the bench.
"I think for the player, this can be a lesson," Mancini said. "This can't happen on a strong team."
Balotelli slammed a cup to the ground and later removed his jersey as he sat watching the rest of the half. He did not return from the locker room following halftime.
"I hope he understands that he needs to have good behavior," said Mancini, who noted that the situation is finished in his eyes.
Earlier, the Italian scored on a penalty in the 20th minute after Micah Richards was taken down in the box.
Mike Magee tied it for the Galaxy in the 53rd, finishing a high-arching floater from outside the box that carried just over the reach of Hart.
"When I saw the way it bounced and him be able to volley it, I had a feeling it was going to get on goal," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "It was a fabulous goal against a fabulous goalkeeper."
Manchester City played their starters big minutes in front of the crowd of 24,897 for the exhibition game.
"They're a good team, so we knew it would be a good test for us," Manchester City midfielder James Milner said. "But that's what you want for preseason, a good test, good fitness. All-in-all, it was a good game."
