Lights on or off?
What is the actual purpose of going lights out while on investigations in homes and buildings? Should an investigation be preformed with the lights on or off? What are your opinions?
Re: Lights on or off?
I guess the best idea would be to replicate the environment in which the phenomenon happened. So if people experience creepy thing during the day there would be very little point of investigating at night and in the dark.
Re: Lights on or off?
Ah, I see. That makes sense then. I would say the majority of all paranormal activity seems to take place at night. Therefore, investigating in the same circumstances that the home or building would be in at the hour that the activity happens seems like it would produce the most evidence. Good thinking, Donn!
I imagine your team investigates with lights off then?

Spirits or Ghost are Energy, most of the time to see you need dark, because energy is light. (God) If you are aware of surroundings you con see energy, or spirits in light

What!!!! Dude seriously pick up a psysics book man!!!!! To see energy we need the dark?!?!?! I have a specialty in optics and visual science and that makes no sense!
Re: Lights on or off?
well... *scratches head* I can't really disagree with what Donn said there. I'm pretty sure he's right- we don't need dark to see energy. Does the dark make it easier to see energy?

Re: Lights on or off?
Haven't moving orbs been captured on film in the past? I thought they have been. Or were they all just bugs? Well, anyway, if they have, and if they do, indeed, give off their own light source, then I suppose it would make sense that they're easier to see when it's dark?
Re: Lights on or off?
I guess this answers the light or dark question. what do you think?

No one can disagree with me...especially when they get lost in my big lovely eyes!
Re: Lights on or off?
Haha, you guys make me laugh. That daytime orb is, I would say, just as bright as any captured in the dark.
Re: Lights on or off?
Our group just had a discussion about this very topic.
I think that there are three reasons why most groups prefer the lights to be off on investigations:
1.) The psychological rush. I think that ghosthunters...perhaps more than anyone else...enjoy being scared. I think that being freaked out is a big part of why a lot of people are in this field, and it's just spookier in the dark.
2.) Light anomalies are more visible in the dark. Provided, of course, that the anomaly creates it's own light. If people are witnessing a shadow person, turning off all of the lights is going to make it next to impossible to witness it! Which is why it amazes me when TAPS or whomever goes dark in a place where shadow people have been seen.
3.) Having the lights off increases some of your other senses, such as hearing. In a location with lots of audible phenomena, having the lights off might increase an investigator's chances of hearing something, since they won't be distracted by visual cues.
We've had success with both kinds of investigations...ones in complete darkness and ones at noon in broad daylight.
I think it mostly depends on what kind of phenomena have been experienced in the location. Once you know that, you will know what the optimal setting will be:
Light anomalies = Lights Off
Shadow anomalies = Lights On
Audible phenomena = Lights Off
Visual phenomena = Lights On
The way we get around this is to do half the investigation with the lights on, and half with the lights off. If you can swing this, it's a great way to do an investigation.

That almost made me laugh Pepsi out of my nose!
Re: Lights on or off?
I think it doesn't really have any impact on the paranormal activity at all. If it is a true paranormal event, it wouldn't matter if the lights were on or off don't cha think? I think it is a matter of comfort or something with the investigators themselves.
